Marauders Kick Cancer – October 20, 2023
The Marauders Men’s and Women’s soccer teams will be supporting the UVic Vikes community on October 20, 2023. They aim to raise funds for the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada. The reason for this fundraising event is to honour the memory of Mackenzie Rigg, who was UVic’s former captain. He was diagnosed with glioblastoma and sadly passed away in March 2022.
Mackenzie’s family started a research grant in his name. The first two recipients were Dr. Lisa Porter from the University of Windsor and our CDCR Director, Dr. Sheila Singh. Dr. Singh’s research project was titled, “Targeting Glioblastoma Recurrence with anti-ROBO1 Immunotherapy.”
Dr. Singh expressed gratitude for the research award, stating that the, “Funds raised from this event will support fundamental and basic discovery science, and allow scientists to pursue ‘high-risk, high-reward’ projects and ideas that may not be considered safe investments by conventional funding agencies. It is from these discoveries that the next cure for glioblastoma (GBM) might emerge, so thank you to everyone who will support scientists to take risks and be bold in uncovering the underpinnings of these hard-to-treat and challenging brain cancers.”
The games will occur on Friday, October 20, starting at 6:00 p.m. at Ron Joyce Stadium on the McMaster campus. Come out and support the teams!
All proceeds will go to the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada.
