Trainee of the Month – Stefan Custers
Stefan is a 5th year PhD student (Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences Program) in the Singh Lab
Stefan is a member of the Singh Lab. His research focuses on epigenetic and lipidomic mechanisms in group 3 medulloblastoma, as well as establishing an in vitro culturable model of group 4 medulloblastoma. The impact of cancer that Stefan witnessed as a teenager had a lasting influence on his education and drive to understand the nature of things. In his free time, Stefan enjoys books, beers, and going on nature walks with his girlfriend and dog.
1. What is your current research focus?
Currently, I am working on epigenetic and lipidomic mechanisms in group 3 medulloblastoma, as well as establishing an in vitro culturable model of group 4 medulloblastoma.
2. What made you interested in pursuing cancer research?
The first time I witnessed cancer and the impact it has on everyone involved has left a lasting impact on me (I was teenager at the time), and I think it has directed my education more than I realize. This together with my inherent drive to want to understand the nature of things.
3. What are your interests outside the CDCR and the lab?
Outside the lab I enjoy finding new beers, read books or watch documentaries on various topics, having homemade pizza movie nights, hitting the gym and going on long nature walks with my girlfriend and the doggo. Also, did I mention beers yet?
