Trainee of the Month – Lindyann Lessey
Lindyann is a member of the Daniel Lab, studying how intestinal inflammation leads to colitis-associated colorectal cancer, with a focus on the roles of transcription factor Kaiso and p120-catenin. Her passion for biochemistry, molecular biology, and teaching drew her to Dr. Daniel’s cancer research lab. Outside of research, she enjoys audiobooks, walks, trips to Niagara Falls, and binge-watching Netflix.
1. What is your current research focus?
My research focuses on the molecular mechanisms involved in the transition from intestinal inflammation to colitis-associated colorectal cancer. I am also trying to elucidate the opposing roles of the transcription factor Kaiso, and its binding partner p120-catenin in intestinal inflammation and tumorigenesis.
2. What made you interested in pursuing cancer research?
My initial objective was to find a lab focused on research that would contribute to improved human health outcomes. During my undergraduate studies, biochemistry and molecular biology were very fascinating to me and my intrigue helped to solidify my future career aspirations. I knew from that moment that my career would involve aspects of these two disciplines. Additionally, as a teacher, I was always eager to plan and execute practical laboratories and loved the idea of using science to create something or expand on what was already known. So, I combined these interests as I searched for graduate programs that would fuel my passion and fulfill my interests. During my search for graduate programs, I found Dr. Daniel’s lab which was ideal to afford me the opportunity to pursue all of my passions while pursuing a PhD. Thus, I ended up in a cancer research lab, where I can have a positive impact in the scientific community that is focused on finding preventive measures to cancer development.
3. What are your interests outside the CDCR and the lab?
My personal interests and hobbies include listening to scintillating E-books, enjoying leisure nature walks, visiting Niagara Falls, comedy shows, travel and the occasional Netflix binge.
