Trainee of the Month – Yuhan Liao
Yuhan is a member of the Han Lab. Her research develops advanced sequencing methods to unravel glioblastoma (GBM) at the isoform level, revealing novel therapeutic targets to advance precision medicine. Driven by GBM’s challenges and potential patient impact, Yuhan aims to deepen scientific understanding and improve outcomes. Outside work, she enjoys reading, films, supporting women’s and LGBTQ+ rights, and swimming.

1. What is your current research focus?
My current research focuses on developing an advanced full-length transcriptome sequencing method that combines the strengths of multiple approaches to deepen our understanding of glioblastoma (GBM) at an isoform level. This method aims to provide in-depth isoform-level insights, allowing us to examine tumor progression, treatment resistance, and immune interactions in unprecedented detail. This comprehensive approach has the potential to uncover critical molecular mechanisms, identify novel biomarkers, and reveal therapeutic targets, paving the way for advancements in precision medicine for GBM treatment.
2. What made you interested in pursuing cancer research?
My interest in cancer research stems from a deep fascination with the unknowns in science and the potential impact of uncovering them. GBM, with its heterogeneity and very poor prognosis, represents one of the greatest challenges in modern medicine, and yet so much remains to be understood about its underlying mechanisms. The possibility that our work could lead to real benefits for patients is incredibly motivating. My goal is to contribute to advances that not only deepen our scientific understanding but also improve outcomes and quality of life for those affected by this disease.
3. What are your interests outside the CDCR and the lab?
Outside of my work, I’m passionate about reading and watching movies, especially in sociology and political philosophy. I’m dedicated to supporting women’s rights and LGBTQ+ rights and aim to contribute positively to minority communities. I also enjoy swimming as a way to stay active and unwind.
