CDCR Research Day Symposium – a great success
The latest Research Day Symposium organized by the CDCR was a great success. Our annual symposium was held on September 22, 2023, at McMaster Innovation Park. The event was attended by several trainees who presented their latest research through eight oral presentations, nine rapid-fire presentations, and fourteen poster presentations.
The highlight of the event was the keynote address by Professor John Bell (Senior Scientist, Ottawa Hospital Research Institute). He spoke on the topic “Synthetic Virology Strategies to Create Cancer Therapeutics”. There was also a one-to-one interview with Director Dr. Sheila Singh and Professor Bell with questions from CDCR’s trainees on his journey as a cancer researcher.
The event ended on a high note with some touching speeches by the families of our two generous donors. Professor Tom Graham presented the Cindy Lee Graham award to Allyson Moore from the Bramson Lab. The Cindy Lee Graham Award is presented “to a graduate student who has made significant contributions, or demonstrates a clear potential to do so, in brain or central nervous system cancer.”
Mark Janke presented the newly established Alexander Janke Memorial Scholarship in Brain Cancer Research on behalf of his son, Alexander, who recently passed away from glioblastoma. The scholarship is awarded “to a graduate student who has made significant contributions, or demonstrates a clear potential to do so, in glioblastoma or other brain cancer research.” This year’s recipient is Daniel Mobilio from the Singh Lab.
Here are great photos on the day from Patrick Ang (Singh Lab).
